TOPIC: Quantum quenches: prethermalization, thermalization and dynamical phase transitions
Abstract
Results are presented for the quench dynamics of interacting one-dimensional bosons in a commensurate lattice. A novel time-dependent renormalization group approach combined with a solution of a quantum kinetic equation is employed to study the problem. The dynamics is found to fall into three regimes. The first is a short time regime which depends on microscopic parameters. The second is an intermediate time prethermalized regime where inelastic effects are weak and the system shows universal behavior. The third regime is a long time regime where inelastic effects are strong, causing eventual thermalization. Besides these three regimes, for certain quench protocols that involve quenching across a critical point, a new kind of "dynamical phase transition" can occur where perturbation theory breaks down at a finite critical time after the quench. The meaning of this dynamical phase transition, and its consequence on observables will be discussed.
