TOPIC: Experimental quantum annealing
Abstract
Quantum annealers solve optimization problems by evolving a known initial configuration at non-zero temperature towards the ground state of a Hamiltonian encoding a given problem. Open system dynamics are an important feature of quantum annealers, and they are not necessarily universal quantum computers. Can quantum effects play a functional role in experimental open system quantum annealers (D-Wave) as they scale up? Can quantum annealers outperform classical optimization algorithms? We will review recent progress in addressing these questions.
