TOPIC: Studies of Vortex Physics in 2D with Bose-Einstein Condensates
Abstract
With the experimental, numerical, and theoretical tools developed for atomic-gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), studies of quantized vortices, compressible quantum fluid dynamics, and quantum turbulence are rapidly developing. In particular, studies of two-dimensional (2D) quantum turbulence and 2D vortex dynamics in these atomic-gas superfluids are currently experiencing a surge of interest. This seminar will focus on recent BEC experiments at the University of Arizona that have explored 2D quantum turbulence and vortex generation and manipulation in highly oblate BECs. Associated numerical modeling and analytical developments will also be briefly summarized. With such work, we aim to better understand characteristics of quantum turbulence and superfluid dynamics.
