TOPIC: From photon bursts to quantum beats. Experiments in cavity QED
Abstract
A single rubidium atom interacting with the two orthogonal polarization modes of an optical cavity presents new possibilities for studying the interaction of light with matter. This system, through spontaneous emission and Faraday rotation, allows for single atom detection. Experiments with moderate coupling between the atom and the modes show conditional dynamics visible through correlation function measurements including the evolution of quantum beats in the ground state.
