Turning Back Time in an Optical Lattice

Abstract

I propose an experiment to perform an echo (based on a time reversal) in the Bose-Hubbard model implemented with cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. The echo is obtained by applying a linear phase imprint on the lattice and a change in magnetic field to tune the boson-boson scattering length through a Feshbach resonance. I will discuss current experimental capabilities and the feasibility of the experiment. I will argue how the echo can be used to build different kinds of sensors to measure e.g. strength of external fields such as gravity, the fidelity of the quantum simulation, or the critical point of the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition.
