TOPIC: Having your cake and seeing it too -- in situ observation of Mott insulating domains in optical lattices

Abstract
We observe incompressible density plateaus, dubbed "wedding cake" structure, for a monolayer of atoms in a 2D optical lattice. The density profiles reveal crucial thermodynamic information to investigate the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition and potentially quantum criticality.
